Vítor Verdelho Vieira, A4F, PT: Industrial Archaeology

 

Vitor Verdelho Vieira is mentor of several companies that he co-founded with partners in different sectors. He started his first microalgae biotech company Necton, SA - www.necton.pt in March 1989. Now the company is a European leader in the production and sale of traditional sea salt and fleur de sel, as well as the production of microalgae for aquaculture and cosmetics. He is also co-founder of A4F - Algae for Future, SA - www.a4f.pt an international reference company in the sector of microalgae technologies.

He is the General Manager of EABA the European Algae Biomass Association, https://eaba-association.org with headquarters in Florence, Italy. His business experience is wide and ranges from engineering consulting and real estate to biotechnology and medical devices. In the different companies where he has been involved, he developed and participated in more than 40 R&D projects along the last 30 years and interacted with more than 200 different organizations in Europe.

Between 2000 and 2015 he has been involved in the management of SpinLogic the entrepreneurship programme and business Incubator from the Catholic University in Porto, where he followed and supported more than 200 startup projects. He is presently visiting professor in Católica Porto Business School and School of Arts in Catholic University in Porto, Portugal. He is the author with Susana Costa e Silva of the 3 volumes Book: The Business Case Roadmap: https://www.amazon.com/business-case-roadmap. He has a background in Physics from the Porto University Sciences Faculty and established his management knowledge through consulting experience and more than a dozen specialized training courses in Portugal and abroad in the last 30 years.

Jean Paul Cadoret, Greensea, FR: Microalgae & Biotech

 

Jean-Paul cadoret is Managing Director of the private Marine Biotech Company Greensea. With a Master degree in Marine Biology and a PhD in Applied Molecular Biology. HDR at University of Nantes.

 

Since 1988, he has been successively Researcher, Team leader, Lab Director and Unit Director in the governmental Institute IFREMER (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea).

 

Co-Founder of the company Algenics, its specialties in the general frame of marine biotechnology focus on the physiology/biotechnological valorization of microalgae.

Silvio Mangini, Archimede Ricerche, IT: Legislation and Trends

 

Silvio Mangini is Technical Manager at Archimede Ricerche Srl, subsidiary of A&A Fratelli Parodi Spa (Genoa) engaged in industrial development of high quality microalgae biomass and active ingredients manufacture, running the biggest microalgae plant in Italy and founding member of EABA. MSc degree in Industrial Chemistry with 35 years of experience in energy management, process engineering, food and pharma regulations, microalgae biotechnology. Involved in BIOFAT FP7 on algae biofuels and Saltgae H2020 EU projects. Former member of CEN/BT/WG218 and actually Convenor of CEN/TC454 Algae standards /WG5.

Anabela Raymundo, ISA, PT: Microalgae for Food

 

Anabela Raymundo is a Chemical engineer, MSc in Food Science and Technology, and PhD in Food Engineering. Assistant Professor with Habilitation, integrating the LEAF (Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food). Responsible by the areas of Rheology and Food Texture and Quality Control in Food Engineering Graduation and Master and in the Master of Gastronomic Sciences.
Main research areas of interest: functional properties of macromolecules; development of new food products; evaluation of the rheological behavior of different food matrices and relations with the structural composition. Main work focused on the use of poorly exploited food sources (e.g., microalgae biomass and food industry by-products) for the development of high added value products. Participates in several national and international research projects.

Aude Carlier, Olivier Microalgae, FR: Industrial Spirulina 

​

Aude Carlier worked on microalgae R&D since 2000 to purify, characterize and optimize microalgae and culture process for aquaculture, agriculture, food, feed, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Aude received a PhD in molecular and cell biology in 2007 from Nantes University through her doctoral research at IFREMER on microalgae biotechnologies. Then she co-founded a company named Algenics to optimize microalgae strains and develop microalgae for industrial processes. In February 2016, she joined OMA to design the plant production and optimize all the process of Spirulina production.  OMA produces high quality Spirulina for agroindustry and develop innovative products like frozen Spirulina.

Bruno Sommer Ferreira, Biotrend, PT: Industrial Heterotrophic Microalgae

 

Bruno Ferreira is a Chemical Engineer and has a PhD in Biotechnology. He carried out research in the development of processes for the bioreactor cultivation of microalgae, bacteria, yeasts, fungi and animal cells, including stem cells.

He is co-founder and CEO of Biotrend, a company specialised in the development, optimisation and scale-up of bioprocesses, and of Silicolife, an advanced computational biology company. He coordinated projects for clients, form small start-ups to global multinationals, and participated in 15 European research projects as principal investigator. Bruno authors more than 40 publications in international journals, book chapters and patents.

He is advisor for public and private entities in the areas of industrial and marine biotechnology and is member of the Executive Committee of the BlueBio Alliance.

Payam Mehrshahi, University of Cambridge, UK: Engineering microalgae for biotechnology 

​

Payam Mehrshahi is a senior research associate at the University of Cambridge with an interest in developing regulatory systems to overcome bottlenecks in metabolism of high-value compounds in the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.  Payam has 15 years of research experience in using genetic, molecular and analytical biochemistry techniques to study primary and secondary metabolism in plant and algal systems. During this time, Payam has used different engineering approaches to modify native metabolic reactions, and/or introduce novel pathways to augment native metabolite abundance or production of novel compounds in different photosynthetic organisms. Payam is a member of several collaborative projects that use synthetic biology and metabolic engineering to develop new production systems for high value compounds (e.g. Innovate UK, BBSRC, OpenPlant).

Payam has served on the advisory Board for PHYCONET, a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council Network in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (BBSRC NiBB) and served as an advisor to the consultancy firm AGRO.GES.

Joaquin Pozo Dengra, Biorizon Biotech, ES: Microalgae and Biofertilizers 

 

Dr. Joaquín Pozo Dengra has studied Chemistry at the University of Almería where he received his PhD in 2010 in the area of biochemistry and molecular biology. He has been working for 6 years as Head of Biotechnology area and Director of analytical services department at TECNOVA Center of Technology. He has a large experience in developing and managing several national and international Projects as principal investigator and project manager. He is partner and head of R&D projects in Biorizon Biotech.  Co-supervisor of 3 Master thesis, he is author in 9 articles published in refereed journals, 1 chapter of book, 4 patents, more than 30 congress communications and 3 sequences submitted to GenBank. He is member of the editorial Board of the journals “Food and Raw Materials” and “Science Evolution”. He works as R&D consultant for a large number of national and multinational companies being the author of more than 30 projects funded.

Alberto Reis, National Laboratory of Energy and Geology, PT: Biorefinery & Extraction 

 

Dr. Alberto Reis: Chemical Engineer, PhD in Biochemical Engineering, is currently a Researcher and Deputy Head of the Bioenergy Unit within the National Laboratory for Energy and Geology (LNEG) in Lisbon, Portugal and Coordinator of the Biochemical Engineering Program at the same institution. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Lisbon (IST), Portugal in 2001 studying the integrated production of metabolites with commercial interest from cyanobacteria produced in different photobioreactors. He held postdoctoral research appointments at the University of Birmingham (UK) in 2002, 2003 and 2006. He was also Project Technical Manager in BIOEID S.A. from 2003 to 2006. Currently team member in 6 on-going international projects in Bioenergy, and Coordinator of Portuguese project SIMBIOALGA (New symbiotic approach for a truly sustainable integrated microalgae production directed to a biorefinery platform). Coordinator of an Iberian-Latin-American Thematic Network CYTED P711RT0095 “Iberian-Latin-American Society of Applied Algology SI3A” (162 researchers, 32 groups/institutions, 12 countries). Dr. Alberto Reis’ scientific interests are in the areas of fermentation and photobioreactor technology, with emphasis on scale-up/scale-down studies. His scientific projects focus microalgal biotechnology and microalgae-based biorefineries, CO2 fixation and wastewater treatment. Author or co-author of more than 80 international peer-review papers.

Elisabete Matos, Soja de Portugal, PT: Aquaculture 

 

Elisabete Matos is Director of Innovation at Soja de Portugal S.A., assisting the group’s companies through the development of collaborative R&D projects, with renowned universities and research institutes but also with clients and partners. With a degree in Marine Biology from the University of Lisbon, she has started her career as a production manager for a semi-intensive aquaculture unit for European seabass and gilthead seabream in the Algarve. she moved to Faro in 2008 to proceed with her PhD studies (in Aquaculture – Nutrition) at the University of Algarve, doing research on the modulation of fish quality through a nutritional approach. In 2012 she joined the aquaculture department of Sorgal S.A. as part of the technical team, before being invited to develop the Soja de Portugal group's Innovation Department in 2014.

Luís Costa, A4F, PT.

 

Luís Costa is a Biological Engineer with a Chemical Engineering Ph.D. He has been with the A4F team since 2009 and is currently the Chief Operations Officer. Luís has an extensive knowledge and experience in microalgae biotechnology, both in R&D activities and in design and operation of pilot and industrial microalgae cultivation units.

 

As a project manager he has been involved in the management of the A4F Lisbon Laboratory, the FP7 projects D-Factory and BIOFAT and also the Algafarm project in Pataias (pilot and industrial implementation and operation).

Edgar Santos, A4F, PT.

 

Edgar Santos holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Process Engineering. He has an extensive knowledge and experience in project development activities, having integrated several national and European R&D projects, and he is a specialist in the design and implementation of industrial-scale microalgae production units. He is currently responsible for managing the ALGATEC - Eco Business Park while supporting the activities of DBOT of A4F.

Tiago Guerra, A4F, PT.

 

Tiago Guerra has a background on Molecular and Cellular Biology with a Biochemistry PhD in algal biotechnologies and he is currently the R&D Executive Officer at A4F. He joined the company in 2013 as a project manager for the Photo.comm and DEMA projects and now oversees the development and management of all proposals of National and International projects as well as the current R&D projects including ABACUS and PHOTOFUEL. He has over 10 years’ experience in the R&D microalgae field and heads A4F’s laboratory and pilot unit teams, totaling 8 researchers, 1 PhD and several Master students.

Diana Fonseca, Valorsul, PT.

 

Diana Fonseca is a Chemical Engineer who, after graduation, worked on the microalgae sector for 11 years. She joined A4F right at its formation, and grown from junior to senior project engineer, and later to Head of the Engineering Department. She has managed the installation of a pilot production plant for the FP7 BIOFAT project, with 5000 m2 area, 1M€ investment and 50 ton/year predicted production, and more recently the engineering project of the ALGATEC plant, a project dedicated to the installation of three microalgae production plants with a total of 14 ha, 22 M€ investment and 600 tons/year production.
She is now working at Valorsul, a Municipal Solid Waste Treatment and recycling company, in the Innovation and Project Department.
